Wimbledon Hill
The Hill at Wimbledon is a patch of grass where people without show-court tickets watch the tennis on a big screen. In 2021 nobody was allowed to stand on it. The brief was to put that experience on the web instead.

Results
- 0110,000+ concurrent players at peak
- 02Architected for millions of registrations
- 03Real-time second-screen experience synced to live matches
- 04Renewed for a second year and rebuilt as a metaverse with quests and prizes

01
Ten thousand at once
A second screen is only worth building if it moves when the match moves. Every connected fan needed the same state at the same moment, and they all arrive when a set ends.

02
Millions of registrations
A tournament has no soft launch: it starts on a fixed date with the peak on day one. We split the registration path from the live path so a rush on one could not take the other down.

03
Year two: the metaverse
Wimbledon renewed and the brief grew to avatars, quests, quizzes and prizes. Far more state per user, same audience volume. We built the Metaverse API and the infrastructure under it.

04
Asked back
Plenty of event platforms work once. Wimbledon Hill ran two consecutive years at the same scale, with a larger feature set the second time.
